COVID-19 RT PCR Testing in Toronto Experience

Writer's picture: Guru Shankar Muthu RajGuru Shankar Muthu Raj

I had to undergo a COVID RT PCR test in Toronto since I had to prove 'covid negative' for my travel. I reached out to a few of the friends to know their experience on Covid testing which was helpful to me, I thought I will share my experience on how to register for the test and my experience at the testing center.

Step 1 - Appointment booking is mandatory - As the first step to covid test, pre-booking an appointment is mandatory.

Profile registration: I created profiles through the Trillium Health Partner site and also through the William Osler Health system website and I found the William Osler site to be more user friendly.

Register your profile - During the registration only basic details like Name, address, phone number, email address, and OHIP card details were requested. website for registration -https://covidbooking.williamoslerhs.ca/Account/BookRegister

Appointment Booking-After successful registration, book an appointment for the SWAB test https://covidbooking.williamoslerhs.ca/OnlineBooking

During the appointment booking, the hospital location can be chosen. I chose the Etobicoke 'Queen's plate Drive' testing center as it was close to my residence.Appointments can be booked only 3 days in advance and available time slots can be chosen. It is suggested that 8 AM early appointments were not crowded. After choosing the time slot, you can choose whether the test is for an individual or does it include a family member. I chose family as I had to test for my wife as well.If you choose family, you will be requested to enter the spouse/ dependent's name, OHIP number, and contact details. Once the booking is successful, a confirmation email with the test location address details was received.

Step 3- On the day of the appointment:

*****Mandatory - Mask should be worn at all time, carry your OHIP card and the confirmation email

I was there at the location 15 minutes before the appointment time.

At the entrance, the confirmation email was validated by staff and a sheet with a QR code is provided. ( one sheet per vehicle)

As we drove through the testing center, we scanned the QR code using a mobile phone which populated a form in the browser. Fill in the form before reaching the testing tent.

In the form, basic contact details, family doctor address, and name, OHIP details were requested.Fill in one form per person. For the dependents rescan the same QR code and fill in their details in a new form.

First tent: As we drove through, at the first tent a staff arrived and collected our OHIP cards in a plastic zip-lock without any contact, individual ziplock bags were used for each person. Once we drive through the tent, we were requested to switch off the vehicle's engine and they validated the details if the details are correct we were asked to proceed to the next tent for the SWAB test, if not we will be asked to leave the premises.

OHIP cards were returned and we were asked to place them in the dashboard, making sure the details are visible for the staff to read.

Testing tent - As we approached the testing tent, another staff came and looked into our OHIP card at the dashboard and placed a pad with papers on the car's mirror outside.

Once we entered the test site, we were asked to switch off the engine and our names were reverified. After the confirmation, you will be asked to lower your mask from the nose ( but mouth covered) and the staff performed a nasal swab for 5 to 10 seconds which was slightly uncomfortable.

Step 3- Test results:

You will be shared with a form that had two numbers MRN and account number. Make sure you don't lose it as it's mandatory to check the test results.

Test results can be checked online from the next day, during the next day it was displayed as "inprogress" and the day after ( 2nd day from the test), our test results were "Negative" ( Thank GOD)

Also, the results can be emailed from the website.

I hope the above details are helpful. Send a chat message on my web site, if you need any additional information. I will be happy to help.
