After exhaustive settling down works day after day in a new country, I decided to have a relaxed Saturday. The new place I moved in a couple of weeks ago gives me a mixed feeling, it confuses me; at times, I think I am in Punjab as I see lot of people wearing turban in streets, at times I think I in Tamilnadu when I hear the beautiful Sinhala Tamil in Indian grocery stores but the infrastructure of this place is similar to the USA & the reality is I am in Mississauga ,Canada near Toronto.
While driving to the Indian grocery store my roommate pointed a small shop at a corner which typically looked like an Indian bakery store near schools where we get puffs to munch, my roommate said that we get good vadais over there. Immediately the Maduraikaran inside me peeped out and said we are getting the vadais today.
After the grocery shopping, we hit the vadai shop operated by Tamils from Srilanka to my surprise paruppu vadai was available , which we fondly call it as aamai vadai (translated to tortoise vadai) in Madurai, probably because it’s appearance resembles like tortoise’s shell. When others ordered a couple of vadais , Maduraikaaran in me made me order a couple of aamai vadais and a couple of ulundha vadais ( medu vadais) for to go.
We decided to have coffee and vadai in the evening after hitting the home, but on the way, we felt something was missing, (mind voice – Kaaram iruku , sweet nahihey). On the way, we saw a Pakistani store and we grabbed some freshly made jalebis. If I could metaphorize Pakistani Jalebi in a sentence ( Alwa na irutu kada alwa, Jalebi na pakistani’s jalebi)
After reaching home , didn’t had the patience to make coffee started munching an aamai vadai ( mind voice; bliss = hot vadai) soon when the vadai got over, to enhance the Madurai native feel I was searching for a good manvaasanai neranja song , played the “Mailaanje song from enga veetu pilla” (When Shreya Ghosal and Pradeep sing together what a combo).
Jalebi sweet followed the vadai ( again Madurai kaaran mind voice started speaking to me; “it is Bliss”), then had a couple of uluntha vadai with a sweet jalebi break in-between them , with lot of self-control and knowing the ultimate bliss of having coffee and vadai together , made a cup of strong BRU coffee and munched the aamai vadai alongside it. Although my senses in tounge were feeling sad that it was the last vadai , my tummy senses conveyed a sense of satisfaction.
Srilankan’s vadai , Pakistani’s Jalebi in Canada , what a blissful Saturday for a Maduraikaaran.
Enjoy every moment in life, if I could make out a blissful evening in a new country you too could in any situation. All that is needed is a mindset to be happy, just to be happy in any situation.
